“every 60 seconds, someone somewhere is making the switch to Tempur-Pedic”?
I saw this mattress commercial that said that quote in the title. I think this is complete bullshit. I don’t think insurance company’s don’t have that kind of true statistics, let alone a mattress. I know they lie, but can they really lie that much? They just make themselves look like complete idiots! I mean maybe a week, or maybe even 3 days, or even possibly each day, but not each minute, I mean c,mon. This is just ridiculous.

Why not write to this “illogical” company and show them that their ads are obnoxious as well as stupid. Maybe they’ll make a few changes. Personally I love the girl jumping up and down while the wine doesn’t spill! How do we know that there isn’t a board underneath the wine glass? (by the way, I recall the original ads in which they claimed they supplied the bedding for the astronauts – they may be supplying our entire armed forces and expeditionary forces by now.)
It sounds unlikely initially, but if you want to be really investigative, do the math. There are 60 minutes in an hour, 1440 minutes in a day, and 525,600 minutes per year. (Well the actual number is slightly different, but you get the idea). At one switch a minute, that’s about 500K mattresses sold a year. Why not look up their sales numbers? Doesn’t actually sound that far-fetched.
*Just looked it up: Tempur-Pedics sales, just in mattresses, was 651.9 million in 2006 (the most recent number I could find). Let’s say they sell a mattress for an average price of $900. That’s still over 700,00 mattresses a year. Obnoxious advertising? Maybe, but it’s probably accurate.
Assuming the numbers are correct then it is true. Not literally selling a mattress every minute but if they sell 525,600 mattresses year they can make that assumption. They may sell 12,000 on Saturday between noon and 4pm. 1,700 during the week. And 40,000 during a big discount sale. But dividing the numbers up evenly would say they sell one every 60 seconds. Even though it’s a little silly as a claim it is valid.
That adds up to about 106million dollars a year and that seems about right for a company that size.
